Here's where my take comes in.
I WANT lootboxes back in Overwatch as a series again and the biggest reason is this below.
TWENTY-SIX DOLLARS.
I can already here the "oh but at least you get exactly what you want" arguement, here's the thing, if I went into this same event in the first Overwatch which is Junkenstein OR any other seasonal event: Christmas, Summer Games, Chinese New Year, etc. I could spend that same $26 CAD and get a package of lootboxes, an entire package of them, I don't remember how many but I believe it was at least 10 to 12 of them and I had the ability to get skins like that Witch Kiriko one AND several other things like voice lines, emotes, sprays, and more. Probability exists sure but I did that when Overwatch came out and spent the money during the first Halloween event and I got Witch Mercy and Frankenstein Roadhog, BOTH of which are Legendary skins, and then all the other stuff as well. Same price and both skins, while sure it could've come out a dud there's no way I would've gained nothing out of it.
I can see people arguing back against me on this one by saying ya you got stuff but what if you didn't get Witch Mercy and Frankenstein Roadhog and it was a bust of $26. That's where my mindset says, "ya I might not have gotten a Legendary skin but I got enough extra stuff that was the equivalent to it and as long as I have enough coins during the event, I'm able to snag the skin anyways". Therein is the other method, if I couldn't get it from a lootbox, then I was able to buy it from the store with coins if I had enough and if not then there was anniversary events down the road where all the event costumes were available for coin purchase. It's having the ability to get it in numerous ways that helps; as of right now my only way to obtain Witch Kiriko is to spend $26 CAD to buy a package with her in it. The same goes with several unique new skins that they've released for Zenyatta, Mercy, and Genji in the Shop so far this year; Overwatch Coins for money is the only way to get them and each skin is around $26. That's Valorant levels of money for a skin (which is a whole other topic, the Valorant/CS:GO skin stuff).
I am kind of terrible myself in terms of micro-transaction spending but I was always willing to get lootboxes for Overwatch from time to time because I knew I'd get like four unique things per box and while not all of it was great, sometimes it would be and that was always neat. Now my only options for cool skins in the future of Overwatch 2 is either grind out hella hard like I am in the Battle Pass to try and get the semi-cool skin for Junker Queen and the SUPER cool Genji skin at the final tier OR OR OR the other way is to fork out hella cash to grab one skin. Lootboxes in Overwatch gave you a chance to get skins without that problem and you also got one EVERY level you gained in the game, it was perfect and the thing is that Blizzard could use both lootboxes and the Battle Pass to monetize the Free To Play model they've gone with, it is still entirely possible.
So ya, let's hope they bring lootboxes back into Overwatch; I want some of those sweet Overwatch 2 things without having to dish out my entire wallet. Just my two cents folks and I know I'm gonna get some clap back on this, I look forward to hearing the discussions.
