Which brings me to my current topic, The Quarry's co-op mode, is an absolute travesty in comparison to every other game they have ever released. I think one reason I'm judging them even harsher on this one is every game has had co-op at launch and this one they waited a MONTH after launch until the implemented it. But me and my friends were still excited to play the "Wolf Pack" mode together. We finally played it and it was a mess, like we were so disappointed.
Normally, in games by Supermassive, one person controls one character in the scene and one person controls another and you go through finding collectables and moving through the game. Each of you making dialogue choices separately for your individual character, doing actions for your character, and passing or failing different QTE's for your character. Throw all of that out of the window with The Quarry. Instead of two players doing that we have the host of the session controlling the character and when it comes to decisions it is all based on the mode you select and even then it's not so much. If you select "Lone Wolf" no matter the decisions of every other person in the lobby, the hosts decisions hold final sway, whether it is the choice in dialogue or the passing or failing of QTE's. Okay that's rough but the "Pack Wolf" mode must be better, well only if you are playing with numerous people, because then it goes with the most popular selection of the dialogue selections and QTE pass or fails. The problem is, what if you are only playing with one other person, if you have a difference of opinion what does it do, nothing special; you need to have a bare minimum of three people for "Pack Wolf" to even be viable and even then it is still not great.
Then we travel down my last issue with the game's multiplayer, is based on achievements. Whether it is the Steam achievements, Xbox achievements, or PlayStation trophies it doesn't matter; what matters is the massive problem that multiplayer has with it. And I'm going to all caps this for people who haven't played, but will in the Wolf Pack mode, but like achievements. ONLY THE PACK LEADER, IT DOESN'T MATTER IF IT'S LONE WOLF OR PACK WOLF, ONLY THE HOST OF THE GAME GETS THE ACHIEVEMENTS IN GAME. My friend found that out the hard way after our play-through, which sucks because I already had gone through once so things like getting all the chapters finished, etc I had but he didn't; so it is something to consider if you do like these and plan to play with a friend or trophy hunt or whatever.
Again, if we didn't have to wait a month for THIS version of a multiplayer mode, I'd still be displeased but not nearly as displeased as waiting a month then getting a half-baked mode like this. All we can hope is that when Dark Pictures Anthology: The Devil In Me comes out that our documentary crew has fun exploring the replica of real serial killer H.H. Holmes murder hotel in a GREAT co-op mode like all the other Dark Pictures games; that Supermassive gets back on track with the amazing that I expect out of them.
All I know is that I can't wait to see what happens in that murder hotel.................
