Well that's just it, it's the roster.
Now typically fighting games, especially Arc Systen Works ones, have a decent sized roster and tend to have maybe 3 characters after the fact as DLC characters. Sometimes they're even good with letting people get one DLC character for free within the first week of launch, like they did with Elphet and Dizzy from Guilty Gear Xrd Sign/Revelator. It made you feel like, "yes okay I feel like I'm still getting ripped off because I have to pay for 3 or 4 extra characters if I want them, I still have a ton to play with." That is not the case with Blazblue Cross Tag Battle and it has the community in an uproar. You see, at this point ArcSys releasing DLC isn't new like I mentioned above, however they've always stayed at like 3 characters or so and they've never let you know off the hop about it. With BCTB, I'd have to say this is the first time ArcSys has literally thrown a pile of shit in the communities face and said "okay well here you go guys we've been building a solid roster across 3 amazing fighting franchises and RWBY here's 20 characters and by the way 20 more are on the way as DLC"
Yes......20 characters are base game and TWENTY more that's TWO-ZERO, that's 50% of the roster is set to be paid DLC and not only did they let people know that they did it when they announced Blake Belladona from RWBY and said she'd be the first DLC character of the 20.
Okay ArcSys, you're planning to put all of team RWBY plus two other RWBY characters in and only Ruby and Weiss are in the base game. Screw you if you wanted to play as Yang, like I did, right from launch. Also, important Blazblue, Persona 4, and Under Night characters all being left on the chopping block and locked behind paid downloads. That's just ridiculous, absolutely fucking ridiculous. I am usually okay with them releasing one or two characters after the fact. However, this egregious abuse of DLC, locking 50 damn percent of the roster behind money, is absolutely ridiculous and probably the worst use of DLC I've seen outside of the giant lootbox mess at the end of last year.
I absolutely hate about this game that:
1) 50% of the roster is extra $$$
2) Ruby and Weiss are the only two members of RWBY represented with Blake as DLC #1 and who knows how long it will take for Yang (who I wanted to be on Day One) and the last two roster additions
3) It's going to take away heavily from all 4 rosters
4) Under Night Inbirth doesn't get much exposure mainstream already and this won't help their roster be represented correctly.
5) Who knows what kind of a shell the regular Blazblue roster will be ?? Outside of regulars like Jin, Noel, and Ragna how many others made the 20 people cut.
6) You're not getting an equal amount of characters from each franchise.
ArcSys is making themselves out to be 1000x more greedy than they have ever been in any game they've ever made, I linked a YouTube video on the bottom here done by Jim Sterling. Now he doesn't ever cover fighting games but he covers massive fuck-ups in the game industry all the time; when you get yourself on his list man is that a bad sign. He makes good points about Complete Editions, especially knowing that 50% of the roster is locked is probably best to do that, that means initial sales will bomb here unfortunately as a series like Blazblue barely has any sort of standing North American wise. It's no Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat but it is one of the best fighting games out there with solid characters and great mechanics it is a fun series.
It's a massive disappointment to me and many others who were looking forward to this new game. I hope seeing this massive backlash that ArcSys does a sensible thing like....add 10 of those DLC characters to the main roster, I'd find 10 DLC characters still overboard but much more acceptable.
