A lot of people might say I'm coming with a bit of bias on this because I am a fan of Tim Tebow but it's because I am fan that I feel like I need to take a look at this "experience" that just happened. We all know that Tim Tebow is a Quarterback, played QB for the University of Florida and led them to a National Championship and got himself a nice Heisman trophy. One of the best passers and one of the guys with the most records in college football. When he moved up to the NFL drafted by the Denver Broncos it was a foregone conclusion being a first round pick that he was the planned future of the franchise. Problem being he was drafted by Josh McDaniels and happened to be there when McDaniels was on his way out and John Elway took over ownership bringing John Fox in as head coach. They went with Kyle Orton at QB until finally they let Tim Tebow play and that's when Tebow Time took over the nation. The way he carried himself on the field and off the field, inspired his team, and the way he always seemed to pull out 4th quarter comebacks; everyone always said Tim had Jesus on his side and that's why. After taking a terrible team to the playoffs and then past the Steelers in the playoffs before being slammed by Tom Brady, that was it for Tebow, Elway was having none of it and sent him to the New York Jets. He was told by coach Rex Ryan he'd get a true chance to compete for the starter job but was definitely not given a chance to surpass "the Sanchize" Mark Sanchez. At the time because of it, everyone suggested Tebow play Fullback or Tight End, get used to it and try and make a go of it but he wasn't having it because he "was a starting caliber QB". After that he played for the New England Patriots but was cut at the last game of the preseason and the same goes for the Philadelphia Eagles. That having happened he was done with the game of football and decided to pursue another love of his, professional baseball. Tebow was signed to a developmental deal with the New York Mets, playing Single A and eventually AA and AAA ball but obviously never reaching the Show.
Then something interesting happened.
His former coach Urban Meyer became the head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars. A team that was Tebow's "home team" as he grew up in the city, and was currently living in Duvall where the Jags play since his baseball career ended. That's when we all heard something interesting, Urban decided to bring in a guy that helped him win a national championship in Florida to try out for the Jags...........at Tight End. One of the two positions suggested to him when he was on the Jets and still in his prime, now at age 34 he was deciding to switch positions and try to make an NFL team. Most people were in agreement, he wasn't going to make the team not at Tight End at his age having never played it before. From my perspective as a fan was, I knew 100% that I agreed with them, Tebow despite how much I dig the guy he was too old to play a position he'd never done before; he didn't know how to block, had never truly run routes, never had to escape proper NFL coverage, etc. What I did think though was this, realistically he shouldn't make the team, but Urban had like a Taysom Hill package for Tebow that had him catching, running, and occasionally throwing the ball. Most importantly, I thought Shad Khan (the Jaguars owner) wouldn't pass up a chance at MASSIVE merchandise sales because despite what people may say about the guy, people love Tim Tebow. In fact, he hadn't even officially made the roster but his jersey was up on NFL Shop and had become the top selling jersey for quite awhile before finally falling behind Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes again but he was still in the top 10 after that. I figured Khan was going to say, "keep him on the team because the guy prints money".
That was until we saw him in action during the first preseason game the Jacksonville Jaguars played. It was embarrassing. If Urban Meyer didn't cut the guy he would've lost the locker room, he would've lost the fans, he would've lost all credibility he's had. Tebow went out there and though he did have a few moments of decent, one in particular where he ran the correct route but someone jumped in and snagged a catch meant for him as the primary receiver on the play. It was his blocking that killed him. It was so bad that it went viral on Twitter that night. Watching it, I'm pretty sure I've seen high school players play better. It was like he wasn't even trying and it was sad to watch. Needless to say that come Tuesday everyone was like, he's going to get cut, no doubt and he did obviously.
Thus ends the Tight End experience for Tim Tebow, despite me hoping for better, realistically this is what we all knew was going to happen. Though he is still technically an NFL free agent, so if a team does want to sign him he's available...........he's a license to print money and I wouldn't be surprised if he ended up somewhere this season maybe playing special teams or fullback.
Here's three clips from my favourite sports talk show Skip and Shannon: Undisputed discussing Tim Tebow's "block", his release, and the address of Urban Meyer saying why they had to release him. I love Shannon Sharpe's perspective on this whole thing because as a Hall of Fame NFL Tight End this probably made him cringe the entire time.
