Everyone who knows me, knows that as far as old school wrestling goes, I'm a huge fan of Jim Cornette.
I enjoy hearing his backstage stories and antics whether it was the old ones when he was managing the Midnight Express in NWA/WCW, whether it was is WWF days as both creative and managing Vader, his days on creative as well as on-screen commissioner in TNA, or his days on creative at ROH. Or now and his current podcasts, "The Jim Cornette Experience" and "Jim Cornette's Driv-Thru" where he and co-host Bryan review WWE and AEW programming.....or occasionally Impact. But generally, he's always been full of interesting stories and bits of information about the business I find so interesting.
I didn't know he'd gotten back into commentating as well. Apparently he had been doing commentary for NWA's Powerr show, a show that airs on YouTube, showcasing what's left of the NWA. Not too much left of that wrestling but it does still exist since Billy Corgan of the Smashing Pumpkins purchased it in 2017. It's nice they are trying to get it back to a decent territory sized wrestling show again though, this is definitely not competition for anyone just moreso keeping a historic brand alive.
Everyone that does know Jim Cornette also knows he likes to go off on tangents or that he likes to talk a lot or that he says things quite stupid without thinking first. And that's what happened. During a match between Nick Aldis and former WWE star Trevor Murdoch he said, "Murdoch is the only man I’ve ever known that can strap a bucket of fried chicken on his back and ride a motor scooter across Ethiopia. Trevor Murdoch can take care of himself!”
Which between the starvation in Ethopia and the fact of the stereotype of black people enjoying fried chicken a lot; it is easy to see why that is quite racist.
Well you guys want to know my quick thoughts on the incident after finding out what it is, well that's simple, I appreciate Jim Cornette's work in the wrestling industry and all his stories, but man you gotta draw the line somewhere.
I know he has a tendency to shoot off but to my knowledge I've never heard him spout off anything racist before which is why this incident honestly shocked me. To a degree, anyway. Because he does talk without thinking but again, he's never spouted anything racist before while I've listened to him, which is why I will still listen to his podcast. It's usually all about wrestling which is why having a person with over 40 or 50 years of business experience judging today's product is so beneficial.
BUT this was clearly racist and he did deserve to get fired by the NWA. So yes, his termination was justified, you can't be racist towards a group of people and not expect ramifications and if it seems like on his podcast that he continues his ways or if he doesn't apologize on the next Drive Thru or Experience then I do know that it might be time to give it a break and let us remember the Cornette of old. Not now.
All I thought was.......wow Jim.........really............that was terrible, like really terrible.
I'm glad the NWA did take down the episode, edit out the racist comments, and reupload it though so we do still get to see the show. Without the dumb commentary.
